On place mapping..

A place-mapping approach to site engages a macro lens. To place-map is to recognise the ‘pre-designs’ or conditions of a place. From a birds eye point of view, or another distinct sensory perspective, questions are asked that can be as simple as, what am I noticing most about this place? Or more detailed: What is the atmosphere of this place, its dominant textures? What qualities does it exude? What elements does it consist of?

Place-mapping can be identified as a live conversation or a physical drawing in and of site, where choreography operates as a cartographic process. The term emerged within Orr and Sweeney’s collaborative work out of necessity, to describe what was naturally occurring during creative processes working across terrain.  As a strategy for engaging with site, the opportunities place-mapping brings enable not only a sense of belonging, appropriateness of behaviour and the recognition of protocols, but the term also acknowledges the perceived ‘truth’ or depth of a place that might otherwise go unnoticed, or more likely, noticed but not spoken of or shared.

Ethically, this approach embodies the principal belief that the responsibility of meaning construction is removed from the anthro-centric towards the inclusive properties of site.

The act of place-mapping embraces such qualitative shifts that knowingly occur within contemporary scientific and artistic collaborative inquiry through a recognition of and navigation through physical space that  increasingly actively drives creative decision making.
